Environmental Noise Assessments
Spectrum Acoustics provides environmental noise assessment services for a wide range of proposed developments and existing operations. Our assessments support projects of varying scale and complexity, from complying development and local development applications through to State Significant Development (SSD).
Our assessments consider noise emissions from proposed developments and the potential impacts of existing environmental noise sources, including road traffic, rail and surrounding commercial or industrial activities. Assessments are undertaken against applicable planning requirements, environmental noise policies and site-specific criteria.
We provide support throughout the assessment and approval process, from initial project review, site inspections and noise measurements through to establishing background noise levels, determining applicable noise criteria and preparing acoustic assessment reports. Our services also include construction noise impact assessments and the preparation of Construction Noise Management Plans (CNMPs). Our involvement can extend to responding to requests for further information (RFIs) from consent authorities, recommending practical noise mitigation measures, and providing acoustic certification for Construction Certificate (CC) and Occupation Certificate (OC) stages. We also undertake follow-up compliance monitoring and certification to demonstrate compliance with relevant development consent conditions where required.
Environmental Compliance Noise Monitoring
Spectrum Acoustics provides environmental compliance noise monitoring services for mining, quarrying, industrial, commercial and other operational premises. Our monitoring programs assess noise emissions against applicable development consent conditions, Environment Protection Licence (EPL) requirements and site-specific noise criteria.
We undertake attended noise monitoring using precision sound level meters with Class 1 characteristics as defined in AS IEC 61672.1:2019 and current NATA calibration. Our monitoring procedures include the identification and assessment of operational noise contributions, consideration of prevailing meteorological conditions and differentiation of site noise from other environmental noise sources to accurately characterise emissions from the premises being assessed.
Our services include routine compliance monitoring programs, supplementary attended measurements and validation of operational noise levels recorded by permanent monitoring systems. These services assist clients in verifying operational noise contributions, assessing compliance and preparing responses to noise complaints or regulatory enquiries. We also prepare technical monitoring reports, provide recommendations for operational noise management and assist clients in meeting their ongoing environmental management and reporting obligations.
Our experienced consultants are familiar with the site induction, safety and operational requirements associated with undertaking noise monitoring at NSW coal mining operations.
3D Predictive Noise Modelling
Spectrum Acoustics provides predictive environmental noise modelling services for proposed developments, existing operations and operational planning scenarios. Our modelling capabilities support projects ranging from commercial and industrial developments through to large-scale mining, quarrying and infrastructure operations.
We utilise iNoise 2026 by DGMR Software, a specialist environmental noise prediction platform incorporating internationally recognised calculation methodologies, including ISO 9613 and CNOSSOS-EU. Our modelling considers relevant factors including source sound power levels, operating conditions, three-dimensional terrain, ground absorption, buildings, acoustic barriers and meteorological conditions.
Our modelling capabilities allow us to investigate a range of operational and design scenarios, including alternative plant and equipment configurations, operating locations, meteorological conditions, building layouts and development designs. We also assess the effectiveness of proposed acoustic mitigation measures, including noise barriers, acoustic screening, building orientation and other design treatments. Through comparative modelling, we assist clients in identifying practical measures to reduce noise impacts and achieve applicable environmental noise criteria.
Modelling results are presented through receiver-specific noise predictions, noise contour maps and supporting technical assessments, providing a comprehensive quantitative basis for evaluating potential environmental noise impacts against applicable assessment criteria. These results inform environmental impact assessments, development planning, operational decision-making, acoustic design and noise management strategies, while supporting regulatory approval processes.
Acoustic Design & Compliance
Spectrum Acoustics provides acoustic design advice and compliance assessment services for residential, commercial and other noise-sensitive developments. Our services assist developers, architects, builders and property owners in addressing acoustic requirements throughout the design, construction and approval process.
We assess building designs against applicable development consent conditions, relevant Australian Standards and planning requirements, including AS/NZS 2107:2016 – Acoustics – Recommended design sound levels and reverberation times for building interiors, AS 3671:1989 – Acoustics – Road traffic noise intrusion – Building siting and construction, and the State Environmental Planning Policy (Transport and Infrastructure) 2021. Our assessments focus on achieving appropriate internal noise levels, particularly where developments are exposed to environmental noise sources such as road traffic, rail operations and surrounding commercial or industrial activities.
Our acoustic design recommendations include suitable glazing specifications, façade and roof construction, wall and ceiling insulation, acoustic seals and other building treatments to reduce external noise intrusion. Where required, we identify rooms where alternative ventilation arrangements may be necessary to achieve internal noise criteria with windows and doors closed. We work with clients to identify practical and cost-effective acoustic treatments that achieve the required performance while considering the proposed building design, construction methods and project-specific constraints.
We also provide acoustic compliance assessments, site inspections and certification to assist with satisfying development consent conditions and supporting Construction Certificate (CC) and Occupation Certificate (OC) applications. Where required, our services include reviewing architectural and construction documentation, assessing proposed design changes and undertaking acoustic measurements to verify internal noise levels against applicable requirements.
